Vehicle defected and company fined $825 for string of mechanical issues

A truck looking worse for wear was recently intercepted near Maroochydore, Queensland, and ordered off the road.

It was intercepted by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) Safety and Compliance Officers (SCOs).

“At the time of the intercept it was unloaded. Following an inspection, it was defected and the company was issued with a penalty infringement notice,” said an NHVR spokesperson, adding that the company was fined $825.

“The vehicle works on an island and was travelling to its depot on the day it was intercepted. The vehicle was directed not to be used until all rust was repaired or the cabin replaced.”

Along with being heavily rusted, SCOs found various mechanical issues including brakes operating unequally, uncompliant exhaust pipes, oil leaks, fluid leaks and issues with both the first and second drive axles.

“This type of wear doesn’t just happen overnight, so it’s important to ensure regular maintenance as a part of your vehicle’s service schedule,” said the NHVR.

“If you’re being pressured by your employer to drive an unmaintained truck, please call our Heavy Vehicle Confidential Reporting Line (HVCRL) on 1800 931 785.”
