National Safe Work Month

Fill your safety bucket list this October with a rich array of events and activities to celebrate National Safe Work Month.

An incident simulation, four mock trials and three webinars are among the events being promoted by SafeWork SA as part of this year’s campaign as well as our annual competition encouraging businesses to showcase their own safety activities.

The 2025 theme – safety: every job, every day(external site)(external site)(external site) – encourages all workplaces to prioritise safety regardless of industry, location and size.

Practicing safety: every job, every day means we can reduce the rate of fatalities, serious injuries and illnesses in our workplaces, and ensure that everyone gets home safely from work.

The month will kick off with our education advisors on hand at the Yorke Peninsula Field Days in Paskeville to answer questions and provide as presentation as part of SafeWork SA’s Safety in Agriculture campaign.

This will be followed on Thursday 2 October by SafeWork SA’s Health & Safety Representatives Forum and the presentation of the HSR of the Year Award, and the SA Mine Emergency Rescue Competition (SAMERC).

To be held in the Adelaide Hills this year and open to the public, the 2025 SAMERC(external site)(external site)(external site) will pit eight mine rescue teams from Australia and New Zealand against each other in a range of rescue challenges from 22-24 October.

SafeWork SA’s  Augusta Zadow Awards will also be presented during the month at a Government House ceremony on 31 October.

SafeWork SA will host three webinars during the month to raise awareness about a range of issues, including: Reflections on the key ingredients for workers’ mental health(external site)(external site)(external site)Your questions answered on crystalline silica substances(external site)(external site)(external site) and the dangers of bringing lead into your home(external site)(external site)(external site).

SafeWork SA is again running its popular ‘Organise Your Own Workplace Activity’(external site)(external site)(external site) competition.

Workplaces are encouraged to start planning an activity that will raise awareness about important work health and safety issues.

By registering an activity with SafeWork SA, businesses will go into the running to win a prize from our $2,000 prize pool. The competition runs throughout the month so workplaces can register their activity anytime until 31 October 2025.

Entrants are asked to post descriptions and pictures of their activities on social media, tagging SafeWork SA and then enter via the competition page.

Run by the Local Government Association Workers’ Compensation Scheme, the public mock trials provide insights into the legal framework around work health and safety laws with representatives from Sparke Helmore Lawyers and SafeWork SA.

The incident investigation takes place in the lead up to the mock trial and follows the same case at a fictitious local council where a worker is injured following the inhalation of toxic fumes while cleaning the workplace barbecue.

This year’s mock trials will be held in Port Adelaide, Modbury, Burnside and Minlaton on Yorke Peninsula. The incident investigation will also be held in Port Adelaide.

As part of National Safe Work Month activities, workplaces are encouraged to put safety on the agenda by organising a SafeTea event.

A national initiative, SafeTea(external site)(external site)(external site) emphasises the importance of involving everyone in WHS discussions by encouraging workplaces to grab a cuppa and have a safety chat.
