Anglo dials in to safety upgrades

Reaffirming its commitment to broader workforce and community safety, Anglo American has moved to close a long-standing mobile connectivity gap in Central Queensland, upgrading network coverage along a critical transport corridor used daily by mine workers and emergency services.
The miner has partnered with Telstra to extend 4G and 5G coverage on the road between Middlemount and Tieri, a route that carries hundreds of workers, suppliers and community members each day.
Aquila Mine General Manager Braedon Smith said the investment was driven by safety and by Anglo American’s broader commitment to the regions where it operates.
“Reliable connectivity saves time and can save lives,” he said.
“The road between Middlemount and Tieri carries hundreds of mine workers and community members every day, and improved network reliability will strengthen emergency response capabilities in the region.”
Smith said the improved coverage would also benefit the wider community, particularly during periods of increased travel.
“We know how vital it is for our people and communities to stay connected … and this upgrade will also ensure stronger coverage and safer communication for residents, schools and small businesses across the region,” he said.
Beyond the public road network, the new infrastructure supports faster and more reliable communications at the Capcoal and Aquila mine sites. This underpins safety-critical systems and the digital technologies used across Anglo American’s operations.
Telstra regional general manager Rachel Cliffe said the project demonstrated the value of collaboration between industry and telecommunications providers.
“This investment means better connectivity for the community — not just for mine sites but for families, small businesses and travellers along this key corridor,” she said.
“Access to mobile coverage on the road is important for business, safety and keeping the family entertained during a long road trip…”
The mobile upgrade follows a separate investment in improved wifi at Anglo American’s Middlemount camps, further lifting connectivity on site and in town.
